Choosing the right methods – Key Considerations
Clarify objectives
What specific insights or outcomes you aim to achieve? (Such as identifying emerging trends, exploring alternative futures, or assessing the potential impacts of specific scenarios.)
Understand the broader context
Within which area of life will the foresight exercise take place? (Including the industry, sector, or issue area of focus, as well as relevant social, economic, technological, environmental, and political factors.)
Identify stakeholders
Who will be involved or affected by the foresight exercise?
Review existing knowledge
What are the gaps or areas where additional information or analysis is needed?
Consider resource constraints
(stakeholder availability, exercise duration, working resources, etc.)
Define the time horizon
We recommend at least 10 years. 20-40 years is preferable.
Match methods to objectives
Consider the level of uncertainty, complexity, and scope of the analysis, as well as the available resources and expertise.
Combine methods
Consider the level of participation and the degree of expertise for each step.
